Autism Society - Oregon Chapter

take a break on ASO

ASO recognizes that caregivers of people living with autism don’t have enough time for themselves and could use a much needed break. Since ASO launched the Take A Break Program in 2007, we have fulfilled over 100 parents and/or caregivers to take advantage of a some time off and respite care for their child or children on the autism spectrum.

We are happy to offer this statewide program through 2010. A special thank you to our generous sponsors that make this program possible.

If you are selected for the Take a Break program, you and your significant other will be given a $25 gift certificate to a restaurant and 2 movie tickets. Additionally, ASO will pay for 4 hours of respite care at $12/hour.

Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Guidelines for Respite Care:

  1. You are responsible for booking the respite care. If you already have a respite care provider you can use them. If you need to find one, your ASO chapter rep may have a list of respite care providers in your area.
  2. ASO will not pay for family members under the age of 18 to provide the respite care service.
  3. ASO will pay the respite care provider directly. We will provide you with a form to give to your respite care provider to fill out and fax, e-mail or mail to ASO.
  4. This program is on a first come, first serve basis. Demand in some regions may require Chapter Reps to have a monthly drawing.

Testimonials

“This time away gave us an opportunity to reconnect with each other, have a real uninterrupted conversation, take a nap and sleep in.  I can’t stress to you enough how important this is to our relationship and to recharge our batteries.  Families with children on the Autism Spectrum are so exhausted and we all need a good break to keep up.”

Kathy & Steve, Lane County

“We have been foster care parents for children on the spectrum for over 15 years and currently care for 3 autistic children.  We also have a 9 year old grandson with autism.  This weekend was a first for us when the Autism Society of Oregon treated us to a one night stay at a hotel through the Take a Break on ASO program.  We are usually the ones who are doing the care giving so what a nice opportunity to feel like grown ups again and get some sleep!"

Joan, Multnomah County

"We want to thank the ASO for our wonderful time at the spa. What a nice thing to be able to offer to the families of children with autism. My wife and I certainly appreciated the break. We feel invigorated.  Caring for two autistic children has been quite a challenge for us. It’s nice to know that there is an organization that understands and cares about not only the autistic child, but also the caregivers for those children. We can’t say enough positive things about our experience with “Take a break” on ASO!!!"
